You scan a document with the phone’s own scanner: it finds the edges, straightens the page and lets you retake it before you keep it. From then on it lives in your wallet with its expiry date, and when you renew it, the one it replaced is kept with the date.

Where you have driven is kept by you: three years, and ten for CMV driving, with the gaps accounted for. The file lives in your account and not your carrier’s, so leaving a carrier does not take it with it.
